Balch, who introduced Nihal in 1968 to Hollie Lepley, the University’s Athletic Director, while Nihal was receiving advanced training in Judo in Japan.  As the five-time Sri Lankan national Judo Champion form 1964-1968, and with Mr. Balch’s introduction, Nihal received an invitation to start a recreational Judo program at the University as an instructor.  Once at the University, Nihal was admitted as a political science major and began a journey that would eventually grow into a distinguished career in international business in Washington D.C.  The donors are especially interested in supporting scholarships for students in the Political Science Department who will either intern in Washington D.C., study abroad, or conduct field research domestically or abroad, with a preference for International Relations majors.

Genevieve Simmons who came to Oakland University, then Michigan State University Oakland, in 1960 with five small children in tow.  Bob as "THE German Department" and Gene became involved with student, faculty and staff activities at this small college outside of Rochester.  They hosted many lunches, impromptu ball games and hockey games for the growing OU family. Bob and Gene believed in giving opportunities for cross-cultural experiences and language immersion. Their seven children grew up with students from South Africa and South America, professors from Korea and China, best friends from India and Portugal – it was the best of times.  Money in a large family – particularly on a professor’s salary – was always tight.  However, on two occasions, Bob received scholarships to finance travel and study in Germany to enhance his language skills – and although this left Gene as a single parent for these semesters, she supported him to take these opportunities.  After many years teaching German language and literature, English literature and History and involvement in OU student life, Bob and Gene retired in 1986.  The Donor is especially interested in supporting students while they study abroad and immerse themselves in German language and life.
