• Anne Albertus received her Master of Arts in Teaching from OU in 1998.  She taught high school English and Speech for several years, including at Rochester Adams High School, prior to her retirement.  Ms. Albertus wants to support students pursuing a career in teaching, especially during their student teaching semester to give them an extra boost as they conclude their studies and prepare for their career.

This scholarship is presented at junior year to a Journalism major.   This award is for a student majoring in journalism at Oakland University and currently working on a student newspaper; the person plans to work as a reporter in a newspaper upon graduation; and the person is employed at least 20 hours a week or works for the student newspaper in a staff writer or editor capacity.

• Caleb Ethan Lee was a bright and charitable teenager whose passion extended to children in need in developing nations.  This scholarship is awarded to students who have been accepted into the OU Emerging Leaders Program, the university's premiere leadership certificate program designed for motivated first and second year student committed to enhancing their leadership development and focus on service and improving the local community

• The Carol Kirken Endowed Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students was established in memory of Carol Kirken. Hildum Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Don Hildum, a founding member and former chair of the Department of Communications and Journalism.  Dr. Hildum and his wife, Priscilla Hildum, a longtime Oakland University administrator, started a scholarship for communication majors.  After Dr. Hildum passed, Oakland University faculty, administrators, alumni, friends and family came together to continue this support.  The scholarship is seen as a tribute to Dr. Hildum’s bright life and work on behalf of the program and university, and the promise of communication students to contribute to our society in responsible and humane ways.

Balch Memorial Scholarship for Study Abroad and Study Away was established with the intent of helping students to better understand their global milieu.  Nihal Goonewardene attended Oakland University as a political science major with a passion for International Relations.  He was also employed concurrently by the University’s Athletic Department as Judo Coach from 1968-1972.  He later earned two graduate degrees in International Relations from The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University.   The Donors wish to honor the memory of George C. Balch, who introduced Nihal in 1968 to Hollie Lepley, the University’s Athletic Director, while Nihal was receiving advanced training in Judo in Japan.  As the five-time Sri Lankan national Judo Champion form 1964-1968, and with Mr. Balch’s introduction, Nihal received an invitation to start a recreational Judo program at the University as an instructor.  Once at the University, Nihal was admitted as a political science major and began a journey that would eventually grow into a distinguished career in international business in Washington D.C.  The donors are especially interested in supporting scholarships for students in the Political Science Department who will either intern in Washington D.C., study abroad, or conduct field research domestically or abroad, with a preference for International Relations majors.

• The Hajja Razia Sharif Sheikh Islamic Studies Scholarship was established in honor of the late Mrs. Sheikh, a native of Lahore, Pakistan.  Although Mrs. Sheikh was schooled at home in a traditional manner and did not receive a formal education, she held a strong belief in education and encouraged all eight of her children to pursue college studies; three of her children are practicing physicians.  Mrs. Sheikh was active in her community and a leader in her faith; she performed Hajj and continued to do so even after she was severely disabled by arthritis. This scholarship is for undergraduate students who have completed at least one course in the curriculum for the Islamic Studies minor and meet University standards for academic achievement. The scholarship may be used towards a university approved study abroad program or tuition.

• The Jenna Elyse Balabuch Study Abroad Awards was established by Mark and Susan Balabuch to honor the memory of their daughter, Jenna Elyse Balabuch, who passed away on October 22, 2011.  Jenna was a sophomore at Oakland University and member of Sigma Tau Delta, an International English Honors Society.  At the time of her passing, Jenna was making plans to study abroad in England as a participant in the British Studies at Oxford program.  Jenna was a vibrant young woman who blossomed into young adulthood thanks in part to the University’s English Department.  She worked, held leadership positions with her 4-H club, and managed the barn where she boarded her horse Bo Jangles while she attended school.  Mark and Susan are especially interested in supporting qualified students who are seeking opportunities to study abroad through awards that may be used to off-set the costs of participating in study abroad programs.

• The Jocelyn Chen Scholarship for Art and Art History was established to provide support to College Teaching Apprenticeships in the Art and Art History Department.  To be eligible to receive an award student must be enrolled in courses within the Art and Art History department requiring college teaching apprenticeships (i.e. AH 4997, ART 4997 or DES 4997; or an equivalent course as determined by the department ), who have a cumulative 3.2 GPA.

• The John B. Cameron Endowment in Art History was established in memory of John B. Cameron, PhD., who taught, mentored and guided students, faculty and staff for 43 years at Oakland University.  He selflessly gave of his time, talents and financial resources to improve the qualify of education in the Department of Art and Art History.  Dr. Cameron credited on of his professors with encouraging him to travel one summer after college, which changed his life and set the course for his career. The donor, his wife, wishes to promote similar opportunities for eligible University students.   The purpose for this award is to make annual scholarships to an undergraduate student with at least a junior standing, majoring in Art History, to be used towards expenses related to study abroad travel to Great Britain, Europe or Asia as part of a University approved educational or study abroad program and/or for tuition fees for the educational or study abroad program.

• The Donors established the Lauren Kathryn Roche Endowed Scholarship for Social Work to provide awards to undergraduate students with a declared major in social work for tuition, fees, books, room, board and other costs of attendance. This scholarship is in memory of the donors’ beloved daughter and sister, Lauren Kathryn Roche. Lauren was a gentle soul with a vibrant presence. She had a great sense of compassion for those around her and an innate ability to provide comfort and support. Whether she was hanging out with her family, volunteering on a community service project, interning in the probation department or coming alongside a friend in need, she did so with joy, compassion and loving kindness.  Lauren loved helping other people.  It is our hope that each recipient of this scholarship serves our community with similar compassion and equanimity.

• The Linda McCloskey English Award for Writing Excellence was established in honor of the donor’s mother, Linda McCloskey, a long-time Professor of English at Oakland University.   Linda earned a B.A. in English from Oakland University in 1984.  Continued studies at OU led to a M.A. in English while employed as a graduate teaching and research assistant.  Teaching at OU for over 25 years, creative non-fiction writing became her passion.  She continually encouraged her students to become better writing by pursuing deeper personal reflection, challenging them to greater heights.  The donor hopes, as so eloquently penned by Ralph Waldo Emerson, this award will help students to not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.   The donor is especially interested in supporting the Oakland University English Department through academic scholarships for undergraduate students who display writing excellence via a competitive writing scholarship.

• The Oakland Press Endowed Scholarship for Journalism Excellence will provide an annual cash award to help Oakland University attract, retain and graduate individuals who can leave their positive mark upon the field of journalism.  The scholarship will provide tuition support for an undergraduate student enrolled in Oakland University’s College of Arts and Sciences with a declared major in the Department of Communication, Journalism and Public Relations. The scholarship recipient will be a student who exemplifies excellence in scholarship and dedication to the profession of journalism. This scholarship is awarded each academic year to one full-time undergraduate student with junior or senior standing.  Scholarships awarded to juniors may be renewed for a second academic year, as the award for that year, if all eligibility requirements are maintained.
